Factories, hotels, hospitals and commercial buildings rarely use water exactly as it comes from the ground or the municipal line. Raw water carries suspended solids, iron, hardness, chlorine and sometimes bacteria. A Water Treatment Plant (WTP) removes these impurities to deliver water that is consistent and safe for the intended use.
What a WTP is designed to remove
The treatment train depends on your raw water analysis and the water quality you need at the outlet. Common targets are:
- Suspended solids and turbidity that can clog pumps, valves and heat exchangers
- Iron and manganese, which stain and form deposits
- Hardness (calcium and magnesium), which causes scaling in boilers and cooling systems
- Chlorine and organic taste or odour compounds
- Microorganisms where water is used for drinking or food contact
Typical WTP stages
A well-designed WTP combines physical, chemical and polishing stages in the right order:
- Raw water storage and aeration, which oxidises dissolved iron and improves water quality
- Pressure sand filtration (PSF) to remove suspended solids
- Activated carbon filtration (ACF) to remove chlorine, colour and odour
- Water softening or antiscalant dosing where hardness is high
- Micron cartridge filtration and disinfection (chlorine dosing or UV) as the final safety step
Why the sequence matters
Each stage protects the next. Filtering before softening, for example, keeps the resin bed clean and reduces regeneration frequency. A plant designed without a water analysis is a guess; a plant designed from analysis is an engineered solution. Where WTP water is used
Common applications include boiler feed water, cooling tower makeup, process water for manufacturing, laundry and housekeeping water for hotels, and drinking water after final polishing.
